This magnificent specimen is a fascinating kidney ore, a botryoidal variety of hematite whose fine, mammillary micro-topography breaks the light spectacularly. The intense iridescence on the surface creates a vibrant play of color or red, purple and green hues.
The piece originates from the historic Huth Mine near Hamm an der Sieg in the Rhenish Siegerland district, Germany. This locality was world-famous for its secondary oxidation zones above siderite veins, which produced some of the finest and most color-intense iridescent kidney ores found anywhere in the world.
