This specimen is an outstanding and classic example of the fascinating diversity in which the calcium carbonate mineral aragonite occurs in the world-famous ancient mining district of Lavrion in Greece.

The paragenetic sequence of mineralization is beautifully illustrated in this specimen, as it combines two completely different growth phases and crystallization forms (habits) in a single piece. The lower part, the base of the specimen, consists of the variety known Flos ferri.

In a second generation, sharp-edged, spear- to needle-shaped aragonite crystals have developed directly upwards from this base. These crystals exhibit beautiful translucency, are densely packed, and terminate in perfectly preserved, pointed ends. The slightly creamy to yellowish tint in the transition zone indicates the presence of minute mineral inclusions, so typical of the complex geology of Greek mines. For a specimen of this size, the piece displays remarkable aesthetics and symmetry, perfectly embodying the interplay of robust, organic forms and strict orthorhombic crystal geometry.

In lithotherapy (crystal healing), aragonite is considered a stone of balance and stability. It is said to help calm the nerves during periods of overexertion, promote inner growth, and have a grounding effect during mental distraction. On a physical level, it is traditionally associated with supporting calcium metabolism and strengthening bones and intervertebral discs.
