A fascinating piece of Alpine mineralogical history: this exceptionally attractive Fluorite from the famous Summit Cleft of Weißeck captivates with its remarkable translucency, impressive internal colour zoning and almost magical appearance when illuminated from behind.
The outstanding feature of this specimen is the fascinating interplay of its different colour zones. Delicate, nearly colourless to subtly greenish areas transition into cool, icy-blue hues, while intense violet and deep purple zones create striking contrasts. Under transmitted light, the Fluorite reveals spectacular luminosity, beautifully accentuating its internal structures and the remarkable variation of colours.
Particularly distinctive is the specimen’s unusual elongated, relatively flat shape. Rather than displaying a conventional, fully developed cubic crystal habit, this Fluorite presents itself as an intriguing translucent crystal fragment with a combination of growth and fracture surfaces. Delicate internal structures, fine lines and irregular surface textures lend it a wonderfully individual character.
The darker areas, appearing almost blackish purple in places, provide a dramatic contrast to the lighter, more translucent sections. Especially captivating is the spatial arrangement of the colour zones, which creates a different visual impression depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions. The brilliant turquoise-blue reflections visible in the photographs are further enhanced by the strong backlighting.
The locality adds considerable interest to this remarkable specimen. The Summit Cleft, or Gipfelkluft, lies at approximately 2,670 metres above sea level, just below the 2,711-metre summit of Weißeck in Austria’s Radstädter Tauern mountains. This remote Alpine locality has been celebrated for decades for its extraordinary Fluorites, whose complex crystal development, varied colour zoning and changing growth conditions have produced fascinating collector’s specimens.
