Calcite Excentrique - Winterberg Quarry, Harz Mts
Calcite Excentrique - Winterberg Quarry, Harz Mts
From the Winterberg quarry comes an extraordinary calcite specimen known as "excentrique". The excentriques can grow everywhere in caves. They are very irregular and often formed like a hook, distorted, worm-like. The special thing about them is that they can grow against gravity in all directions. They often curiously end with crystal faces.

The Winterberg quarry in Iberg, Harz Mts is famous for calcite. The quarry lies on the Winterberg Mt, which is home for one of the largest cave systems in Germany, the Iberg dripstone cave. Miners of the quarry, which is active since 600 B.C., found the cave in the 16th century. To this day new smaller and larger vugs with calcite and caves are continously discovered.
